RE: CA hwy 49

I've lived in the California mountains all my life and have never seen anyone pulled over for the 5 car rule- have I just missed it?

RE: Colorado roads in the fall

Thanks you guys! Trying to get over there this fall, Hope we make it. One great grandfather was a miner in Cripple Creek and Aspen and another a cowboy near La Junta (1870-80's) so want to check that out along with the "normal" Colorado stuff.

RE: TV reception question....

It is our experience so far that dtv signals are not "rv friendly". Whereas with analog tv you could receive a signal from good to bad and see some kind of picture to get by with through the snow, with a dtv signal, you either get a good picture or you get nothing. This means if you are not within a metro area or close to the transmitter you are out of luck. So rural reception will be less than it is now.

RE: The first trip out...

We're campers and on our first outing with our camper it rained and it was so nice to lie there and listen to the rain while being all warm and dry while peeking out and seeing the poor folks trying to bug out in their hatchback next door. Soon it seemed too small though and now we camp in a class A.

RE: Rexhall American Clipper?

We just bought a 2005 Rexhall American Clipper 29' on the v10 Ford chassis with 15k miles. We love it so far but then we just stepped up from a 93 Winnebago Warrior 25'. Some of the interior labels are misspelled indicating the unit was assembled by someone using English as a second language without much supervision but other than that everything works so far (except for the coach/chassis battery override).

RE: Driving pet peeves.

Drivers that drive slow on the onramp and don't accelerate to freeway speed to merge. Drivers that turn on their turn signal as they turn - why bother? Drivers that wait till the last possible second to merge or enter the onramp or freeway.

RE: Outside shower, Quartzsite

ibDave, I didn't mean to insult Burning Man, I just used the "hippie" reference to give a quick, one word description of an event that uses self-reliance, leave-no-trace ethics and counter-culture ingenuity to solve problems such as the poster was asking about. But separately, what's wrong with "hippie" anyway? I bet many BM participants could be labeled "ex-hippies" or "old-hippies" and would be proud of it. Everybody, wouldn't the best system use a solar panel to run a filter to recycle the gray water to shower with again and therefore save water in the fresh tank rather than just waste it in evaporation?

RE: Do you know where this is located by terminology?

Our different MH has a "bed deck" that supports the mattress. Ours contains the water tank and storage accessed by lifting the top (mattress platform). Maybe its under your bed. Good luck!

RE: Outside shower, Quartzsite

Hmmm, I have heard that some who go to the "hippie" Burning Man event here in Nevada recycle their shower gray water somehow. Maybe you can Google it.

RE: A Story We Love To Hear!

You have to break the ice. We got out to hitchhike and were smiling and joking around with each other and the second car stopped cause we looked like nice people in trouble. When we got dropped off in Beatty, Nevada local residents loaned us a bicycle and parts off their own trucks and treated us to dinner to get us going again. We just tried to be gracious, friendly and appreciative.

RE: Lake Tahoe River Activity worth the $$$? What else to do??

The float is fun and beautiful. It's fun to start water fights with the other floaters, etc. Are you outdoorsy? Lots of beautiful hikes and kayak rentals. Into history? The state parks are on turn of the century mansion grounds. Into partying? The south shore has casinos, shows and clubs. My nephew said "ok, I'm done. Lets do something else." 2 minutes into the float like it was a carnival ride. Kids today are used to instant gratification and quick "hits" of excitement where everything in between sucks. It was good to see him relax and enjoy 2 hours of mild fun.

RE: Hwy 95 in Nevada

At Silver Springs east of Carson city you can take 95A south through Yerington and cut a couple miles off using a good highway. You take a tour of the last great mining frenzy (1907) in the US by taking 95 through Mina, Luning, Tonopah, Goldfield and Beatty. Tonopah has a great Mining Park and Museum complex. Wave to my relatives in the Goldfield Cemetery as you drive into town. We like the hot springs RV park just north of Beatty too. Private hot pool formed by the concrete basement of an old shed with a tin roof that flaps in the wind for a funky "old west" experience.

RE: Forest service campgrounds

Site size is the most important consideration. We had a class A that was 25' and could get in to about 50% of the campgrounds but now with the 29 footer and the Samurai will be severely limited. Many of these campgrounds have a "host" that will discourage partying but some will be unattended and you take your chances with the "nabes". Most were designed for tent camping so maneuvering the roads may be tough in a bigger rig. I would decide where you want to be and call the local USFS office and hope for a nice person for suggestions. I think we will stay at a commercial RV park and drive around and check out the FS campgrounds. We have had good luck parking and then driving around with the dinghy looking for a good spot to boondock. With all the logging there are many landings (logging clearings) left behind.

RE: Ever been to Idaho?

Idaho ranges from semi-arid in the south to alpine forests and lakes in the north. If you tow a boat, lake Coeur d' Alene and Pend d' Oreille are wonderful. River rafting tours and jet boating are great in the middle of the state. Follow Lewis and Clark's most challenging section of their adventure. Real estate is cheap again I hear. It's like Western Montana only a little more west. Not so much like eastern Washington that has alot of rolling wheat fields. Check out the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon though- it is their "Switzerland of Oregon".

RE: Traveling California

If you are in a hurry go I-5 to Barstow and beyond. If you want spectacular western scenery and plenty of historic places to check out, take 395 and take the time to enjoy it.

RE: For $60K, Class A Gas or Diesel?

My brother just retired and had to have the "cool" DP. He paid $60k for a 1998 Safari 30' with 122,000 miles. We just bought a gas 2005 Rexhall 30' for $50k with 15k miles. Sure the DP engine will go another 750,000 miles but will the rest of it? The Rexhall is not as "luxurious" (not as many accent lights) but it is roomier (we can sit 10 in the living room- not that we want to!). I don't care about being "cool" or going up mountains at 35 mph (towing the Samurai) so the gasser is a better deal for me.

RE: Extension Cords

I just cooked an extension cord by running the roof ac continuously. Most extension cords are rated at 15 amps but I think that is for short bursts like a homeowner or contractor would use it for tools. I switched to a heavier duty (larger wires) ext cord from Home Depot and had no problems.

RE: What would you do?

I know, like a 8 month old long haired daschund is really vicious I agree with the response to kicking the dog but had to laugh at your comment as I was in cable tv field work for about 15 years going into 6 to 12 homes a day and backyards with a big dog between me and the utility pole. The only dog that ever bit me was a dachshund. Big dogs you can intimidate but little ones get so scared they don't think first. Small dog complex.
